Free Chick In Egg Amigurumi Pattern

This is a free amigurumi pattern, based on a chick in a colourful egg.

This pattern requires you to change yarn colours for the egg, but it's completely up to you, if you want to give the egg a solid colour.

You can use this plushie as a gift, but please do not distribute, sell or claim the pattern as your own.

Crochet hook size: 3.50mm

Yarn colours:

Yarn A: Grass Green/Shrimp/Aster/Citron/Proper Purple (100g) x1

- Yarn B: Kelly Green/Matador/Lapis/Sunshine/Fiesta (100g) x1

- Yarn C: Spring Green/Apricot/Cloud Blue/Lemon/Wisteria (100g) x1

- Yarn D: Jaffa (100g) x1

- Yarn E: Black (for embroidery)

Other materials required:

- Stitch marker

- Stuffing

- Tapestry needle

Let's get started!

Note: Unless instructed otherwise, this pattern is mostly done in spirals. I recommend you use a stitch marker, to keep track of where you start each round.

Bottom Egg Shell

Start with Yarn A

Round 1: 8dc in mr (8 sts)

Note: When changing yarn colours, always do this before finishing a particular stitch. Insert the hook, yo, pull through, then change yarn colour before yarning over and pulling through the 2 loops on the hook.

Also, when changing yarn colours back and forth, it's best not to cut the yarn, as it will prevent it from ravelling (though this is already unlikely).

Round 2: [inc with Yarn A, inc with Yarn B] x4 (16 sts)

Round 3: [[dc, inc] with Yarn A, [dc, inc] with Yarn B] x4 (24 sts)

Change to Yarn A

Round 4: [dc, inc, dc] x4 (32 sts)

Round 5: dc round (32 sts)

Change to Yarn B

Round 6: [[3dc, inc] with Yarn B, [3dc, inc] with Yarn A] x4 (40 sts)

Round 7: [5dc with Yarn B, 5dc with Yarn A] x4 (40 sts)

Rounds 8-9: dc 2 rounds (40 sts)

Rounds 10-11 (2 rounds): [5dc with Yarn A, 5dc with Yarn B] x4 (40 sts)

Change to Yarn A

Round 12 (flo): [ss, ch, dc] in next st, [tr, dtr] in next st, [dtr, tr] in next st, dc [dc, [tr, dtr] in next st, [dtr, tr] in next st, dc] x9 (60 sts)

Ss in ch, fasten off, hide tail

Body/Head

Start with Yarn C

Round 1 (back loops of round 12 of the bottom egg shell): dc in the 1st st of round 12 of the bottom egg shell, 39dc (40 sts)

Round 2: [4dc, dec, 4dc] x4 (36 sts)

Round 3: dc round (36 sts)

Round 4: [7dc, dec] x4 (32 sts)

Round 5: dc round (32 sts)

Round 6: [3dc, dec, 3dc] x4 (28 sts)

Round 7: dc round (28 sts)

Round 8: [5dc, dec] x4 (24 sts)

Rounds 9-10: dc 2 rounds (24 sts)

Begin stuffing at this point

Start of head

Round 11: [dc, inc, dc] x8 (32 sts)

Round 12: dc round (32 sts)

Round 13: [3dc, inc] x8 (40 sts)

Rounds 14-21: dc 8 rounds (40 sts)

Optional: insert safety eyes between rounds 16 and 17.

Fasten off, save for later

Top Egg Shell

Start with Yarn A

Round 1: 8dc in mr (8 sts)

Round 2: [inc with Yarn A, inc with Yarn B] x4 (16 sts)

Round 3: [2dc with Yarn A, [dc, inc] with Yarn B] x4 (20 sts)

Change to Yarn A

Round 4: dc round (20 sts)

Round 5: [2dc, inc, 2dc] x4 (24 sts)

Change to Yarn B

Round 6: [3dc with Yarn B, 3dc with Yarn A] x4 (24 sts)

Round 7: [3dc with Yarn B, [2dc, inc] with Yarn A] x4 (28 sts)

Sew the top egg shell to the head, stuffing as you go

Wings (Make 2)

Start with Yarn C

Round 1: 4dc in mr (4 sts)

Round 2: [inc] x4 (8 sts)

Round 3: dc round (8 sts)

Round 4: [dc, inc] x4 (12 sts)

Rounds 5-8: dc 4 rounds (12 sts)

Round 9: [4dc, dec, 4dc] x2 (10 sts)

Round 10: dc round (10 sts)

Fasten off, leave a tail for sewing

Do not stuff

Sew the wings onto the body, between rounds 5 and 10. They're sewn at a slight angle, so that there's a 9-st gap at the top, and 14-st gap at the bottom.

Feet (Make 2)

7ch with Yarn D (6 sts as base + tch)

Round 1: skip 1st st from the hook, 6dc in blo, rotate work, 6dc in the other side of the ch (12 sts)

Rounds 2-4: dc 3 rounds (12 sts)

Round 5: [dec, 4dc] x2 (10 sts)

Rounds 6-7: dc 2 rounds (10 sts)

Round 8: [dec] x5 (5 sts)

Fasten off, leave a tail for sewing

Sew the opening to close

Sew onto the bottom egg shell, between rounds 2-6.

Beak

5ch with Yarn D (4 sts as base + tch)

Round 1: skip 1st st from the hook, [3dc, 3dc in next st] in blo, rotate work, [2dc, inc in next st] in the other side of the ch (10 sts)

Round 2: dc round (10 sts)

Ss in next st, fasten off, leave a tail for sewing

Sew the beak onto the front of the head, between rounds 16-17

For the eyes, embroider with black yarn between rounds 17-20.
